Uganda Wildlife Authority released new tariffs for different safari activities in Uganda. This included Uganda gorilla tracking permits from $700 to $800 ,chimpanzee trekking from $200 to $250 among others. The revised the costs was to ensure the continued conservation of the chimps, gorillas and other wildlife in their respective areas of conservation.
The change in the tariffs takes effect after 1st July 2024. And all gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking permits bought before this date will not be affected by the change in the permit cost.
There are several reasons behind the increase in gorilla permit fees by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. One of the main reasons is to generate revenue for conservation efforts and protection of gorillas. The increased fees will enable the authority to allocate more resources towards anti-poaching measures, habitat restoration, and community development programs.
Another reason for the increase is to limit the number of tourists that come in contact or visit the gorillas. This may lead to overcrowding hence causing stress to these gentle giants and may even lead to disease transmission between humans and gorillas.
The increase in permit fees in other conservation areas is also aimed at promoting sustainable tourism practices. Tourists who come for the wildlife safari are likely to be more aware of their impact on wildlife and ecosystems. This may also lead to support conservation initiatives and contribute towards sustainable development in local communities. Uganda Wildlife Authority aims to promote a more meaningful environment to the tourists who come to tour the national parks in Uganda.
